Bought a new Computer?

Post by abctech »

How to transfer ABC from your old computer to a new one.

This is for single-user ABC only. See separate instructions for multi-user (network) versions.
These instructions apply to ABC5 and ABC6.
  • Step 1. Get the latest ABC Installation program.
(you can download the Full Demo Copy ABC from our website, or ask us to send you a CD).
Run this and it will install ABC onto your new computer.

  • Step 2. Check that the newly installed ABC runs OK on the new computer.
(ignore any requests to Register or enter Password -- just press ENTER to continue).

  • Step 3. Now you can copy your ABC data files across from the old computer. There are several
methods you could use, and all are OK.
Possibly the easiest (if old PC has CD writer) is just drag the ABC5 (or ABC6) folder from the
old computer onto CD, and then on the new computer drag it from CD onto Drive C.
Use Windows Explorer (eg. MY COMPUTER) to do this.

or use a USB Memory Stick if you have one of those. Or external USB Drive.

or Backup to floppy disks (using ABC5) on old PC, and then restore from floppy on new PC (using ABC5)

or contact us if you're having problems. We can suggest other methods.

  • Step 4. That should be all you need to do. Copying your data across will also copy your passwords, registration, etc.

  • Step 5. Always a good idea -- download the latest Update from our website and install that.
(This will just ensure that if you copied any old versions of programs in Step 3, they will be updated).

Things to note

1. Avoid common mistake. When dragging ABC 5 (or ABC6) folder on to new computer, do not drop it into the ABC5 (or ABC6) folder that already exists. You must drop it onto the root directory -- ie. where it says Local Drive C (or D).
When you do it, you should expect to get the warning "Files already exist. Overwrite them????" and you answer YES.

2. If you still have any old ABC Installation disks (ie dated earlier than mid 2007) then please throw these away as they are past their sell by date.
(There is no question about ABC that we can't answer :-)
